Illinois Soybean Rust Commentary (updated: 08/17/11)
Soybean rust has not been observed in Illinois in 2011.
Frogeye leaf spot has been observed in research plots near Dixon Springs, IL in a highly-susceptible variety. Frogeye also has been observed at low levels in other areas of the state. Septoria brown spot and bacterial blight symptoms have been reported from sentinel plots.
Bacterial pustule also is present in the state. This disease produces pustules that can look nearly identical to those caused by the soybean rust. The primary differences that can be observed with a hand lens is that bacterial pustules can be observed on both the upper and undersides of soybean leaflets; whereas, soybean rust pustules only will be observed on the undersides of leaflets
